Pay drivers £2,000 to scrap diesel cars
Tuesday 10th March, 2015
The London Mayor called for the Government to introduce the national scrappage schemefor the most polluting diesel cars to help clean up air quality in the capital.
He said motorists should be offered the incentives to switch to cleaner vehicles with payments of between £1,000 and £2,000 for the most polluting diesel cars that are more than a year old.
Mr Johnson has published a "transport emissions road map" setting out how the capital can meet EU legal air quality limits by 2020, with plans for an "ultra low emission zone" in central London which will charge polluting vehicles more and encourage cleaner alternatives.
He also said central Government should take action such as providing cash to tackle local pollution hotspots and to help public transport become much less polluting, with funds for hybrid and electric buses and taxis which are capable of zero emissions.
Mr Johnson, facing questions from MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee yesterday, said he felt people had been "seduced into buying a diesel vehicle".
He said: "They now feel very hacked off now they're told they are more polluting."
