Illegal Scrap metal dealers

A NEW database of registered scrap metal dealers is to be piloted in the latest step to reduce the number of rogue traders.

The scheme is being piloted first in the West Midlands, including Burton, before a likely roll-out across the country.

Police hope the new database will build on the Scrap Metal Dealers Act introduced in 2013, which made it illegal for anyone to pay cash for scrap metal, and stated all dealers must be licensed.

Staffordshire Police detective chief inspector Ricky Fields, the regional strategic lead for metal theft, said: "The new database will enable local authorities and the police to share information to specifically tackle illegal scrap metal collectors.
